Friends of Overland (FOO) is asking you to help maintain
the high standards established for our school. FOO already helps to fund reduced class sizes in 4th and 5th grades.
Now we would like to expand this successful model to our lower grades.
A part-time credential teaching position costs $56,000; a full-time position
costs $84,000.
Either way, an additional teacher helps to lower the class sizes throughout the K-3 grades. The
student:teacher ratio of 24:1 is an average for the K-3 grades. Some classes might have 24 students, while others might have
fewer.
If we purchase an additional teaching position, this would not be counted in the class size averages. For
example, if the additional part-time teacher were allocated to 3rd grade math and language arts teaming, then the homeroom
3rd grade classes could have the maximum 24 students each, knowing that the additional teacher would lower these sizes during
math and language arts. If the 3rd grade homeroom classes have the maximum 24 students each, that allows flexibility in the
K-2 classes to have fewer students.
The Overland teachers, school administration, and School Site Council have
determined that a part-time teacher would likely be allocated to the 3rd grade. If enough funds are raised for a full-time
teaching position, this would likely be allocated to the 1st grade, given the benchmark importance of this grade in laying
the foundation for reading and other academic skills.
Again, any additional teacher helps to ease the class sizes
throughout the K-3 grades.
Who will benefit from expanding the class size reduction program to our lower grades?
• The children in the lower grades
– who will receive more individualized instruction. •
The children moving up to 4th and 5th grades in future years –
who will be better prepared. • The teachers – who will be able to spend more time with each child. • The
school – which will maintain its standards of excellence. •
The community – which is reflected in the strength of the local
public school.
